lighting up the world…one candle at a time

My fellow blogger and dear friend, Kate, has taken an iconic image and held it up as a beacon in an ever-increasingly negative world. She has imagined a vast darkness lit by flickering candles. And I have been fortunate to receive such light…and pass it along so others might also…pass it along. So I’m humbled to hold in the palm of my hands…the Candle Lighter Award.

I pray that we can keep the light burning…as I light other candles…with mine, asking that the same be done again and again and again. Let us never stop in our quest to light up every dark corner with hope and compassion. For “no man is an island” and every man and woman is my brother and sister. We should reach out to all…as one family under God…one people of this earth.

And so I share Kate’s candlelight with all who read “hugmamma’s mind, body, and soul,” and ask that they kindly share their flickering flame with others of their choosing. As Christ has said “all are called, but few are chosen.” In this case…all who are called…are chosen…for the Candle Lighter Award.

I take this opportunity to not only pass along The Candle Lighter Award, but to also thank these readers. They have surely lit a fire under my feet to continue writing. And I especially thank Kate Kresse at http://believeanyway.wordpress.com for including me among the recipients of the award. A full explanation of it can be found at http://believeanyway.wordpress.com/2011/12/18/creation-of-new-blog-award-the-candle-lighter-award/

I’d like to take a moment to acknowledge other awards given me by generous blogger-friends in the past. That I didn’t take possession of them immediately was not out of ingratitude, but out of the inability to tackle the technical know-how. It takes me a while to gather my wits about me, before undertaking the task. And as you can see, I like to avail myself of the time and thought that goes into such an acceptance. It means too much for me to merely copy and paste…although it makes more sense, given time restraints.

So here and now…I’d like to thank those of you who have deigned to bless me with recognition in the past. That you read my posts and leave comments, is more than I could have imagined when I began blogging in July of 2009.

And well into my third year I have all of you to thank for motivating me to write 754 posts, garnering 39,507 hits and 140 followers.

    • You’re a young person whose writing captures the imagination. As a senior, I find looking at life through the eyes of someone almost 40 years my junior…a walk down memory lane, although not as colorful perhaps. But then again details fall away as the mind ages. Having you value what I write, lets me know I can relate to younger folk. Maybe not in all ways…but in ways that count.

…spread the light…in your own way, always in your own way…hugmamma. 😉

  2. I’m humbled, honoured and inspired to receive your candle. Thank you so much for sharing it.

I agree with you that we are all children of God and we should be out there lighting up all the dark and shadowy places in our world. Let’s keep that light shining bright!!

    • Nancy is the answer to this senior citizen’s prayer. Am in the process of trying to apply her instructions. I can read…it’s connecting the dots that sometimes causes me mental lapses. I tend to overshoot a dot or two, then have to back track. If all else fails, I can count on hubby to help. If he fails then it might be that I’ve caused a glitch in my dashboard, in which case I’ll get the “happiness engineers” to have a look. My backup plan is to create an awards page. No more stressing about things which are just…things.

having received the award from a fellow blogger and passing it along to others deserving of it, like you…is what’s important… 🙂

    • You’re an islander at heart, jeanne…sunny and welcoming. You were among the first to make me feel comfortable on WordPress. For that I’ll always be grateful. And when I endured being spammed because WordPress was having issues with hacking…you extended a hand…and kind words. Both helped me keep my bearing and self-confidence to press on. I’ll never forget your generosity…

mahalo nui loa and warm hugs…always… 😉

  3. Good Morning Hugmamma! What a beautiful post. You are so much more eloquent at accepting and passing on awards. They do befuddle me. I wanted to come over and congratulate you. Congratulations! Thank you for thinking of Under the Oaks and your comment at my blog was sweet and funny 🙂 You are what this award is all about, what Kate had in mind when she designed it. Kate is a sweet and good lady. And so are you Hugmamma. I am so happy to have found you and your blog. It is a must read for me in the morning 🙂

    • You make me feel like The Wall Street Journal, or some other must read. I’m humbled. Truly. I’d never imagined that others would find my writing as compelling as you say. I’d hoped, but not expected.

Blogging has given this empty nester purpose, apart from enabling my husband and daughter to excel, and my pets to thrive. Writing has been, and continues to be, therapeutic. It has also given me an avenue to serve…others. If I can help one person with my personal experiences, then I will have made a small difference…in changing the world…for the better.

      hugs for your sweetness…and loving words… 😉

  4. I relaunched my old blog tonight as a resource for bloggers and diarists. My first post with the new theme is how to add the badges to the sidebars.

For anyone who is looking for writing prompts, journal jar ideas, book reviews and yes, WordPress assistance, consider signing up for a subscription.

In the meantime, here’s the link memorializing how to do this:

            • The internet is probably the newest “Wonder of the World,”…the ninth or tenth, I think. To touch other’s lives with words…wherever they may reside in the world…is an amazing accomplishment for mankind. To befriend heretofore perfect strangers, without regard for color, ethnicity, religion, political persuasion, sexual preference, gender…is a blessing. And I, for one, count this among the blessings in my life…to know people, like you, who are of the same fiber as concerns compassion, hope, joy, peace, friendship. Knowing that we can link up…and spread our particular message is empowering…yet humbling.

we can do it…one burning candle at a time…hugmamma.

  5. Well I tried attaching the award to my blog. I think something went wrong plus I lost the my comment that I had put on here. Oh well. Thank you very much again, just in case. Very sweet award.

  6. Well thank you so much for including me. Thanks to dogear6 maybe I can get it done this time. Someone else gave me an award and I could never figure out how to post it! Fibro fog makes the simplest things so difficult sometimes.

    • You’re always included…anonymous. Won’t you succumb to a gravatar name that hints at who you are? But no matter, you’re always welcome to visit and comment…love if you do, in fact. And Nancy (dogear6) is a genius at figuring out WordPress applications. She’s got me out of more than one scrape during the last 2 1/2 years I’ve been blogging. And you’re so right about the awards…I could never get them onto my blog without strife…and stress. Maybe this time I’ll finally get it, thanks again to Nancy… 🙂

  7. I saw your note asking how to get it into the sidebar. I figured there would be others with the same question, so here it is:

Right click the picture and save as a jpg on your computer, someplace where you can find it again.

Upload the picture into your WordPress media. Towards the bottom you’ll see an URL for it. Leave that window open as you’ll want to copy the URL.

In another window, open up your widgets (under the appearance tab in the dashboard). You want to use the image widget. Click and hold, then drag it to the right into the primary sidebar. You can drag them up and down to get into the order you want.

At this time, a window will open up. If it doesn’t, click the little down arrow to the right of the image widget now in the primary sidebar.

Paste the URL into the image URL line. In the link URL, you’ll want to put a link to information on the award from Kate’s page.

Easy peasy. Seriously. You figured out how to do slideshows, you can this too 🙂

    • Sorry it took so long. But as you can see, I cannot do anything by half-measures. It’s all or nothing…in which case I often find myself coming up short…of awards in hand. No matter. It’s the thought that counts. Hugs for always blessing me with kind words. You are generosity personified, Kate. 🙂
