So it began, the subjugation of humankind to earth’s other species. 

“About time, don’t you think?” exclaimed the ivy to the flowers clinging to its twiggy branches. “I’ve been waiting for this day ever since my ancestors put down roots. Generations  of my kind have put up with humans stepping on us…uprooting us to plant something more to their liking. Who died and made the human God anyway?”

Nearby patches of grass peeking out from cracks in the asphalt chimed in “Down with humans!!!”

An uprising the likes of which the world had never seen was underway.

Mankind would pay.

  1. The Attack of the Killer Tomatoes must have been the welcoming vanguard to your plant invasion. I like the photo and the storyline. I hope the invaders can survive colder winters temperatures. Just a sec! I completely forgot about global warming. This effect will surely pave the way for their shenanigans. Thanks for sharing. 🙂

    • ha, ha…thankfully, we have a small lawn. Although we do have tons of plants in the rest of our garden. Hopefully they’ll remember how I’ve tried to care for them all these years…most times, at least.

    I could see houseplants rising up against me and my brown thumb. 😉 I liked your story. Reminiscent of Day of the Triffids. Perhaps the plants in your story have been the victims of GMO for too long.

    • Perfect plot, Rochelle! Genetically altered plants eventually become vegetative robots who take over the world. In fact, they do so by dehumanizing those who have eaten their altered forms for years and years. You’re a genius! But then again…you must’ve known that already. 🙂

    • Sublimation popped into my head as soon as I saw the photo prompt. I proceeded to write without so much as a backward glance. However somewhere in the back of my mind, I knew something was amiss with my choice of words. Time got away from me, until you reminded me to check my Webster’s. hugs…for setting me straight. I’ve just updated my story using…subjugation.

    • Now that’s something to consider…that it might be scientifically feasible for plants to overwhelm humans. We can die from too much carbon dioxide…yet the plants gain super strength from it. Great story line, Bjorn.

    • I guess I’d better read it too…pretty damn quick. Best to keep abreast of what goes on in both the plant and animal kingdom, especially if they’re fixing to…consume us. Yoicks!!!

  14. Dear Hugmamma, I agree with the plants – I hate to mow the grass, however, residents of my neighborhood are glad my husband does! This is a really great story and may happen some day. I don’t think plants are as stupid as people think, I saw one wink at me the other day – or not. Nan 🙂

    • I grow lots and lots of plants in my garden so as to crowd out the weeds. So I think I’m in pretty good standing with most of the plant kingdom…maybe not so much with the weeds…and the grass. If my husband would allow it, I’d get rid of the lawn and plant more perennials and annuals. As for the animal kingdom…I have 3 cats and a dog INSIDE…a chipmunk, a hummingbird, as well as a plethora of butterflies, bees, and birds. Then there’s the bunny rabbits and deer who love to graze on the plants. All in all…I’m a friend to plant and animal alike. I’m definitely hedging all my bets when they decide to…rise up against mankind. 🙂

    • These days with environmental mayhem proliferating, it feels like it’s only a matter of time. The “if” seems to be transpiring, it’s the “when” we can only continue to guess about.

        • Too long we’ve abused earth’s natural resources for our own selfish gains. Wish we could stop the avalanche, but with the Chinese aiming to get their fair share as latecomers to the capitalist’s dream…I don’t think we have any hope that they’ll pull back from the brink anytime soon. And the Americans, first at the table of bounty, have evidently not sated themselves enough it seems. A greater force than us will have to step in before we totally annihilate all that’s been bestowed upon us.
